Admission requirements
Application is open exclusively to candidates who:
1 Are residing in Kenya, Mozambique, Niger, Nigeria, South Africa, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe and have been recognized refugee status in these countries in collaboration with UNHCR
2 Hold a qualification valid for admission to the chosen Second Cycle Degree Programme
3 Have a Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 3.0 according to the country of graduation tertiary education grading system or equivalent according to Ministry of Education
4 Hold a degree obtained in or after 2019 and no later than the call deadline (please note that some universities do not apply a time limit for graduation, please refer to individual call for applications)
5 Meet the specific admission requirements of the Second Cycle Degree Programme
6 Have never before been enrolled in a degree program at any of the Partner Universities
7 Proficiency in the English language is required.
Application documents
Students are required to submit the following mandatory documentation:
1 Refugee ID card or Proof of refugee registration;
2 A certificate confirming the qualification required for admission to the chosen degree programme;
3 Transcripts of exams passed and relative grades;

2024 APPLICATION CALL!
Many determined and talented, low-income students in South Africa only require financial resources and access to information to better their educational future. This year, the U.S. Mission to South Africa seeks to identify academically qualified and highly motivated, low-income students in South Africa to join the EducationUSA Opportunity Funds Program (OFP).
OFP’s mission is to assist talented and determined, low-income students who are good candidates for financial assistance from U.S. colleges and universities but lack the financial resources to cover the up-front cost of obtaining admission.
OFP works closely with students through regularly scheduled meetings and seminars to assist them throughout the application process to secure admission and scholarships to attend colleges and universities in the United States. OFP finances the cost of the application process, including registration fees for required standardized examinations, and provides free membership to U.S. EducationUSA Advising Centers for its participants. OFP expects a sincere commitment from the students to give their energy and time to the program to achieve their dream of studying in the United States.
Applicants are welcome from all South African citizens and permanent residents. However, students must have access to the internet, monthly, during the program for full participation. Participants will work with our EducationUSA Advisors from May 2024 – August 2025 to secure places and financial assistance to begin study in the U.S. in August 2025.

SELECTION CRITERIA
The selection of finalists for OFP is highly competitive, given limited funding. We look for applicants with:
Strong academic record/ transcript (Distinction Average)
Robust participation in extracurricular activities
Involvement in leadership roles
Excellent community service participation
Financial Need
NOTE: Undergraduate Applicants– If National Senior Certificate (NSC) results are not available, they must be currently in Grade 12/Matric. If NSC results are available, they must be from 2024 or 2023. Students who have already started a university education are NOT eligible to apply for undergraduate admission (i.e., Current Grade 12s or Gap Year students ONLY).

Undergraduate Applicants– Attach a copy of your Matric/Cambridge/Diploma Results and/or Grade 9-11 final reports. Also, only if your first term results of Grade 12 are available. (80% averages and above only- not including Life Orientation)
3. Letters of recommendation:
We will request the name, position, and email address of a recommender to reach out to complete a recommendation on your behalf.
Undergraduate Applicants: This should be a teacher who knows you well and can attest to your character and aptitude in comparison to your peers at your current or previous school. Ideally, it should be a Grade 11 or Grade 12 teacher.
4. Essays:

EducationUSA Scholars Program (ESP) facilitates access to U.S. higher education for academically talented international students. ESP students must participate in an organized cohort advising program for which the Public Affairs Section (PAS) of the U.S. Embassy Addis Ababa seeks to identify 20 Ethiopian students to join the 2024 ESP program. The objective is to assist those high-achieving Ethiopian students in the admissions process to U.S. colleges and universities for better academic futures, with the goal of producing highly-skilled and widely-educated leaders to build tomorrow’s Ethiopia.
The program works with students through regularly scheduled training sessions to assist them throughout the application process to study in the U.S. and apply for financial aid. In addition, the program includes academic counseling, standardized tests (TOEFL, SAT), and college application essay writing assistance. Students will be selected based on academic records, essays, and an interview. Among the total 20 finalist candidates, 15 highly qualified, economically disadvantaged students will be selected to benefit from the Opportunity Program Fund (OPF) program that covers costs related to standardized tests, U.S. visa fees, and the first few successful candidates will also get a round trip ticket to the U.S. The remaining 5 students will participate in the training program free of charge, but they are expected to cover the preparation expenses from their own sources. Mobile data costs will be covered for both program participants.
Eligibility Requirements
In order to apply to the program, you must meet the following eligibility requirements:
Live and attend school in Ethiopia,
High-achieving Ethiopian student,
Complete grade 11 by the end of this academic year and will be attending grade 12 from September 2024,
Commitment to attend the whole (4 weeks) ESP sessions to be offered.
