Eric Scott Montross was a professional basketball player who played in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for eight seasons with the Boston Celtics, Dallas Mavericks, New Jersey Nets, Philadelphia 76ers, Detroit Pistons, and Toronto Raptors. He was born on September 23, 1971, in Indianapolis. Montross played for Lawrence North High School before enrolling at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to play for the Tar Heels1. He was a two-time Associated Press second-team All-American with the Tar Heels and was the starting center on the late Dean Smith’s second NCAA championship squad in 1993. Montross is currently a radio analyst for UNC game broadcasts and works for the Rams Club, the fundraising arm of UNC’s athletics department.

He was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year and shared an update on his condition at a recent “Live Action with Carolina Basketball” event in Chapel Hill. In a pre-recorded video message, Montross told the audience he is in good spirits, but would not be able to join play-by-play announcer Jones Angell on the radio for the 2023-24 season. Montross also shared that the outpouring of support from the Tar Heel family during his journey has been humbling and that he is fighting and will continue to fight every day.
